Update on Life

mattcameron1

It’s getting nice out, I feel like I’ve emerged from a long and snowy winter, and I wanted to give a few updates on the changes that I’ve made to my life.  So, I’ve gotten the children’s book that I was writing pretty much done – the writing part anyway.  This weekend I want to start in on the illustrations, and have someone other than myself read it so I get some feedback on any changes that need to happen.  I’m so glad that I’ve finally finally gotten to this point!  Because I’m trying to write fairly consistently, I’m feeling much more creative, and I absolutely love the feeling!

My quest to get rid of junk around the house unfortunately has not yet turned into an actual plan.  I got a good start on Spring Cleaning last week, but this week has been pretty much taken up with wood stacking for the winter.  We’re almost done with that, well, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, so we’re more than halfway to the end.  This weekend I hope to get a workable plan in place for that.  And, to try and get the Spring Cleaning done, once and for all.  (At least for this Spring!)

My eating plan has been having some pretty good results.  I’ve lost fourteen pounds (maybe more, I haven’t yet weighed myself this week).  I’m eating all that I want, I’ve just changed what it is that I eat.  Oranges, bananas and grapes are some of my latest favorites.  I’m looking forward to the strawberries, blueberries, plums and peaches that the summer will bring.

Here are a few of my recent photos of flowers and trees in all their Spring beauty!

“Fight Club”- FOAK and What it Means

wgbillboard

The Southern Poverty Law Center tracks such things as hate crimes, terrorism, and white supremacists.  They are a well-respected organization and committed to dealing with facts.  As most of us know, there are a lot of white supremacist organizations throughout the U.S.  What a lot of people don’t know, is that there is a lot of talk within these organizations about military operations against various groups of U.S. citizens.  All a person has to do is look at some recent events to see that this is true.

However, the specific issue at hand is the formation of a new group, by Kyle Chapman (I am leaving a link below where you can see who and what Kyle Chapman is) which will be a “highly masculine” group called the Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights (otherwise known as FOAK’s) which is going to be formed for the express purpose to “bring the fight to the streets”.  Recently we have seen an uptick in the violence that protestors are being met with, not only from the police, but also from these groups of the extreme right-wing.

I am not going to regurgitate the links that I’ve provided.  Instead I am encouraging you to read them, and educate yourself.  With the fear of being seen as a lunatic conspiracy theorist, my thoughts are leading to this:  What if, with all the new violence, the President declares Military Rule, Democracy is suspended and we have a dictator?  I know, it sounds insane, however, don’t these various groups vowing to “fight” against protestors (and others) sound a lot like the Nazi Brown Shirts?  Let me know what you think.

Unity

The only way to fight injustice in the world is make sure that we fight for all who are in need of it.  That means that we need to stand up not only for ourselves and our own concerns, but we must stand up for all the others who are marginalized.  We must stand and resist together.  It’s the only way change will occur.

Signs

img_2935

This is one of those signs that everyone should think about and reflect on.  States are drug testing welfare recipients.  While this testing costs a lot of money, few people have been found to have taken drugs.  That money could have been used for other social welfare projects.  Also, there are a few bills in both state and federal legislatures to stop the free lunch and breakfast programs.  Wrap your head around that…a lot of people want children to go hungry.

Standing Rock is just one example of an oil companies’ profits outweighing the right to clean water and air.  Money over people.  The head of the EPA wants to dismantle it.  Does anyone remember why there was a movie about Erin Brockovich?

Refugees are now leaving the U.S. and walking into Canada.  I never thought that people would need to leave the U.S. in order to be safe.  My question, and it should be your question also, who is next?  The LBGTQ+ community?  The reporters who report the truth?  The Jewish community?  Minorities, any minority take your pick.  People who blog about these issues?  The potential list could go on and on.

Lastly, but not least, health care supposedly is not a right.  The U.S. in one of a few countries (and none of them are considered “first world” countries), that do not have universal health care.  We also spend more, by far, on the health care that we do have.  So, what your rights include is,  the right to die from not enough money to pay for health care.  Yes, that’s right.  Death is your right.  That’s what freedom is – apparently.

What’s Wrong with being a Social Justice Warrior?

1173919584-fcb70654dc2e2f511e326b93a6240e2e

I have to admit that I’m extremely confused here.  A few months ago, I started to see strange memes on Instagram which were all very anti-social justice warriors.  Since A, I had no clue as to what this is, and B, it looked like typical back-lash to me, I decided to finally look up the whole thing.  This is what I found:

“‘Social justice warrior’ (commonly abbreviated SJW) is a pejorative term for an individual promoting socially progressive views,[1] including feminism,[1][2] civil rights,[1] multiculturalism,[1] and identity politics.[3] The accusation of being an SJW carries implications of pursuing personal validation rather than any deep-seated conviction,[4] and being engaged in disingenuous social justice arguments or activism to raise personal reputation, also known as virtue signalling.[5]

The phrase originated in the late 20th century as a neutral or positive term for people engaged in social justice activism.[1] In 2011 when the term first appeared on Twitter it changed from a primarily positive term to an overwhelmingly negative one.[1] During the Gamergate controversy, the negative connotation gained increased use, and was particularly aimed at those espousing views adhering to social liberalism, cultural inclusiveness, or feminism, as well as views deemed to be politically correct.[1][2]

The term has entered popular culture, including a parody role-playing video game released in 2014 titled Social Justice Warriors.[6][7][8]

WOW!  So, other people presume they know what these individuals think and feel, and ridicule them for supposedly trying to improve their own social standing through fighting for the rights of minorities.  Cool.  Apparently working for others isn’t really a thing anymore.  I mean, seriously, if you believe this, then all the people who work at places like:  soup kitchens, food pantries, for United Services, NAFI, Habitat for Humanity and the like, are really only volunteering in order to make themselves “look good”.  Of course, oftentimes others go to help out in the aftermath of a hurricane or tornado.  So, these people also are only working in such a way to make themselves look good.

a-philip-randolph-activist-a-community-is-democratic-only-when-the

This, of course, is an attack on human and civil rights.  In this way of thinking, no one really believes in helping others, they only do it to make themselves look better.  Apparently, we’re just a collection of individuals who couldn’t care less about each other and only want to inflate our own egos.  According to this logic, the following individuals really didn’t want to change anything, their motivation was to “look good”:  Jane Adams (better housing for the poor, founding member of NAACP); Louis Brandeis (defended labor laws, etc.); Florence Kelley (fought against child labor); John Dewey (founder of NAACP, fought for freedom of ideas, etc.); Eleanor Roosevelt (advocated for worker’s and civil rights, etc.).  I could go on and on, however, I’ll stop here.  Many of the individuals who have worked for social justice have done so at their own peril.  As it is, many people are arrested every day advocating for social justice.  Yet, the logic of those who denigrate social justice warriors is that they only do so for their own social advancement.  This is said in order to negate any good that comes out of working for the poor, downtrodden, and ignored in society.  After all, if you’ve got yours, why bother helping others?

So, my take-away from this whole thing?  I feel sorry for those with this kind of belief system.  To spend your life making fun of others whose purpose is to make life better for everyone is just sad.  Too sad.

Keeping Depression at Bay

Here are some quotes for those of us who sign petitions, write letters and still feel depressed about the way the country is going.  Keep up your chins, hold love in your hearts, and keep on hoping for a new day.
