What’s New on the Rape Front? – Yes, there is Snark!

rapequotes1

Well, what is new regarding women and rape?  Here are a few things that you might be surprised to learn.  In nine states a rapist has the ability to share custody of the child that was produced from a rape.  Yep, that’s right.  If you’re a rapist, gone to jail for raping a woman, you still get to share custody with the product of that rape.  And, the woman who you raped has to suck it up and have continued contact with you.  Yay for you!

Bill Cosby, who drugged and raped plenty of women, has avoided jail time due to a mistrial, and is now going around the country with the express purpose of teaching other men how to avoid going to jail after they’ve raped women.  I guess you should teach what you know, right?

Betsy DeVos has rescinded Title IX campus sexual assault guidance, of the legal requirement to report a sexual assault, because maybe, maybe there might be a (one) case of a female student lying about rape, and what would that do to the male student?   Of course, 19% of female college students report being raped, but hey, who cares about that?

And, just to end on a “happy” note, the White House website page entitled “Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action” has been taken down.  Don’t be too alarmed though, the pages regarding Climate Change and Animal Welfare have also been taken down.  So, victims of sexual assault are in good company.  Fake News, nothing to see here!

I Just Don’t Get It

a7fc383733f40dc0a0d7479a94a2d71b

It seems like this country is simply going crazy.  There is more hatred being verbalized (and people being brutalized) all over.  I’m sure we’ve all seen the rants posted on social media of people verbally abusing others.  Where in the world is this hate coming from?  I simply cannot imagine anyone having the time in their lives to worry about the following:  where another person is from; what religion they choose to follow; what color someone else is; what gender they are; or what sexuality they practice.

Really, I’d like to know what is going on (or not going on) in the lives of these haters.  Seriously, how can they find the time to get involved in other people’s lives like this?  Don’t they have their own lives to worry about?  Don’t they also have to go to work, raise their children, worry about their loved ones?  How in the world do they have the time to worry about what other people are doing in their own private lives?

Nelson-Mandela-Hate-and-Love-Quotes

And, the most important question of all – what the he** business is it of theirs anyway?  Really, is a medical doctor from India taking their job away?  Is a migrant worker who earns a living picking produce taking their job away?  Is the very fact that someone worships another “god” making their “god” smaller?  Does a different skin tone change their skin tone?  Does the love that someone has for another person change the love they have for their loved ones?  What difference does it make?  I just don’t get it.

I’ve heard all the “arguments” that people try to use to defend their hatred, and seriously they are simply and completely flawed.  Not to mention illogical.  I simply cannot imagine ever having the time or the inclination to stick my nose into something that is just not my business.  If you understand this, please explain it to me.

War on Women Part 4C – Reproductive Rights – Social Issues Series

reproductive human rights

Are reproductive rights a right?  Do women indeed have the right to control what happens to their own bodies, or do they have to do as they are told by the government?  What a question.  If we turn that around, do men have the right to control what happens to their bodies or do they have to do as the government tells them?  Does this sound strange to you?  Is the answer different?  If you did indeed answer those questions differently, why did you?  Is it because women don’t know their own minds?  Do they need men to tell them?

Here is an interesting fact.  In the U.S. abortion was legal and commonplace until around 1880 when most states outlawed it except in the cases when a woman’s life was a risk.  http://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/health-info/u-s-abortion-history/  How is that for an informational tidbit?  This change was due to a few things, including the eugenics movement; physicians wanting to replace and control midwives; and men wanting to control women.  There are now extremely restrictive laws in many states forcing women to travel 100’s of miles to obtain an abortion, or force them to have invasive procedures done to their bodies before they can have an abortion.https://www.guttmacher.org/state-policy/explore/overview-abortion-laws

Not only are women’s rights to their own bodies being denied, but in a variety of ways they are portrayed as simply a “host” to their fetus. As such, they seem to have lost their human rights.  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/24/steve-martin-virginia_n_4847959.html

But this war is not only on abortion, it’s a war on female contraception.  Opponents of female contraception actually shut the federal government down.  Over birth control – a little pill that helps woman for numerous medical issues including:  making periods lighter and less painful, mitigating migraine pain, helping control endometriosis; control imbalances caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome; and it lowers the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers.  http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/features/other-reasons-to-take-the-pill

Also included in this, are the representatives in government who do not want women to have any access to birth control.  Now, according to our Supreme Court, your boss can deny you birth control.   This is of course, based on their religious “rights”; which now are more important than women’s rights to health care.

Another aspect of this attempt to control women’s bodies includes the backlash against teaching sex education in schools.  This includes the idea of arresting and jailing teachers for teaching sex education http://www.care2.com/causes/kansas-republicans-want-to-jail-teachers-for-teaching-their-sex-ed-curriculum.html

In states where there is no sex education, opting for what is called “abstinence only” education – promoting the idea that any sexual activity outside of marriage is “bad” and shouldn’t be engaged in, the rates of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy are on the rise. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/10/06/sex-education-zimmerman-book/73453030/

I’ve included some more links for you to read at your leisure.  What do you think of the bills that have been brought forth in states and the federal government to force women to give birth to dead fetuses; to jail teachers for teaching sex education; to allow a boss to decide whether or not you can use birth control; and the rates of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases in states with abstinence only policies?  Have any of these impacted your own life?  Let me know.
