Does Peace Begin on Your Plate?

1a512464f5e4d9f396beb659faf4f411

There are many choices that we can make.  What you choose to put on your plate is definitely one of them.  While almost everyone who has chosen to forgo animal products grew up eating those same products, however, at some point these people made a choice to not add to the violence and destruction that is so pervasive in the world.  After all, if you can choose to not cause harm to anyone else – including other species, why wouldn’t you?  When I finally confronted that question myself, I knew that I had to get off the Vegetarian diet and become Vegan.

This was a hard decision, not because of myself, but because of the other people in my life, and others in general.  The meat and dairy industries generate a lot of money, approximately $864.2 billion annually in the U.S. alone.  Think of the incentive there is to vilify vegans, along with doctors who speak out against these industries, and you will see where the pervasive negative attitudes come from.  Not only are vegans portrayed in various media outlets as being slightly insane and/or obnoxious, but there are numerous examples of how extreme veganism is.  Why being vegan is considered extreme is beyond my understanding.  Isn’t raising an animal for the sole purpose of killing and eating that animal extreme?

Not only are there the ethical questions regarding killing an animal that doesn’t want to die, but if you add to that the environmental damage done by the massive world-wide meat and dairy industry, you can see how the destruction becomes unsustainable.

Now, back to my question, does peace begin on your plate?  My answer is yes, of course it does.  There is only so much in the way of sustainable food, and when one country has a problem with consumption that causes others to suffer peace also suffers.  I’ve left links below for you to read.  Look up other information and decide for yourselves whether or not you believe that peace begins on your plate.

Do You Love Animals?

53ebf323453c261c8e7c73bd64015e6a--save-the-rhino-wildlife-conservation

Most people love animals. Who doesn’t love their cats and dogs? But does that mean that you love all animals? Do you also love cows, calves, sheep, lambs, chickens, chicks, pigs and piglets, also? Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but if you eat meat, eggs and dairy, you don’t love animals. I know, it’s a harsh statement, and I once “loved” animals, but I also ate them. Most of us who are plant-based were once just like you. We divorced ourselves from the reality of farmed animal’s lives. We lived with the blinkers firmly in place, and simply tried not to think about it. However, there is so much scientific evidence out there showing us how cruel the practice of raising animals to eat is, that we really morally can’t continue to do so.

From animals who sing, to the fact that they form attachments with each other, our understanding of other animals continues to grow. The level of animal sentience is much higher than was thought, and the new evidence just continues to grow. I am including links below for your education on these topics. Please read, follow the links within this articles to the scientific studies, and think about your own choices. If you have any questions or comments please leave them below.

Aging and the Assumption that I am Infirm

Ive-fallen-I-cant-get-up

Okay, I admit that I’m “of a certain age”, however, I must insist that I am not infirm!  My mail boxes, both on-line and the actual mail box are full of “adult” ads for aids such as:  the infamous “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” buttons; adult diapers, gadgets to help me pull up my own socks – because apparently not only am I too infirm to get up off the floor, I wet myself and I cannot bend over to touch my own toes (while sitting down!).  I keep getting phone calls trying to sell me buttons to summon help, hiring a “companion/homemaker”, and to convert my shower into one for people who need to sit down, complete with bars I can hang onto.  And then, there are all the ads for “retirement homes”.  Like I’d enjoy living in an area where everyone is in the same age group.  Who would I play with?  Seriously, who would I color with and play trucks with?  Who would I run around the backyard with?  I really need my younger (much younger) playmates.  Can you imagine the boredom?

I am still in my 50’s, and my husband just turned 60.  Are Americans so infirm at our ages that we all need these products?  I’m also getting calls about less-expensive pharmaceuticals for my imagined diabetes, high blood pressure, extra weight, feet problems, and more!  Are there so many of us in our 50’s and early 60’s who have these health issues?  I hope not, for that makes certain assumptions about our health that are downright frightening.  At my last visit to the doctor he did state that it is unusual for a woman my age to not be on some kind of medication.

Since diet is everything when your health is concerned, I know that I eat much better than the average American.  While the health benefits of no longer consuming oil or animal products has been outstanding, it is a little disconcerting to realize that the typical American needs medicine at my age.  Just think of the money the average American spends on prescriptions.  We could use that money for purchasing better food, and enjoying the benefits to our health.

If it is true that the “typical” American my age is taking so many medications, please, please do yourselves the favor of going to https://nutritionfacts.org/  and reading the information there.  Dr. Greger is the author of the book How Not to Die, and his information is science-based.  Change your diet and you change your life.  Get healthy so you can stay healthy for years to come.  And maybe we all won’t be getting harassed by all those annoying calls and ads.

Ginger – What is it Good For?

ginger root

I’ve recently started drinking ginger tea.  There are reportedly major health benefits to having a cup of ginger tea daily.  Unfortunately, my local grocery store hasn’t been stocking ginger root, so I’ve been using ginger paste.  The preparation is really simple.  I add about one teaspoon (or more) of the paste to hot water, let is steep for three minutes and then strain it into a mug.  I will add a little agave and lemon juice.  I’ve never been a huge fan of ginger; however, I am really enjoying drinking it this way.

Some of the reported benefits include relieving nausea and benefiting digestion; cold and flu relief; reducing muscle pain; reducing inflammation; and reducing cholesterol.  Ginger has nutritional values, including vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, folate, riboflavin, and niacin.

Since, as you know I have Fibromyalgia, I’m all about reducing my inflammation.  However, I am looking forward to seeing how a consistent use of ginger helps my over-all health.  Do you use ginger, and if so has it helped with any health issues you may have?  Let me know in the comments below.

2018 Goals

59cf00b832a3fb27053ba36072c93a53--positive-quotes-for-work-motivational-quotes-for-life

It’s a new year, so here I go again.

Health and Fitness:  I got the new How Not to Die cookbook for Christmas, and I am so excited to try all the new recipes.  So, this part of my goal to eat even more healthy should be fairly easy.  As far as fitness goes, I’m planning on getting back on track with work-outs in the morning.  I’ll be using my Soloflex, FitnessBlender, some Denise Austin and some Billy Blanks Tae Bo.  And, of course, last but not least, Yoga.

Writing/Creativity:  I’ve got some new endeavors for this year.  First off is finishing the illustrations that need doing.  Then my novel – rewrite and finish it.  I am also looking into how to do a Podcast.  Lots of activity and writing projects.

Organization/Household Projects:  Including finishing up with organizing myself and my household.  Also curtains made and shelves re-papered.  Also, there is still “stuff” to go through and throw out/give away.

Business:  Get certificates and finish setting up website.  Start working.

There are some more things that I’d like to accomplish this year, however, they’re just at the starting to think about stage, and I’ll share more as I go.  How about you?  What are some of the goals that you would like to achieve this year?  Let me know in the comments below.

A Vegan Diet Will Cause a Nutritional Nightmare!

a3a928a0d5c7dc7896afbcade685d482--healthy-quotes-vegan-quotes

I don’t know if you’ve seen the latest scare that has come out regarding a plant-based diet.  Apparently, if the entire U.S. population decided to follow a plant-based diet we would all succumb to nutritional deficiencies and die horrible deaths according to a “scientific” report put out by – wait for it…. Robin A. White, who just so happens to be an “animal and poultry professor” at Virginia Tech who teaches animal and poultry use and agriculture; and Mary Beth Hall who works in Dairy Science at USDFRC, Madison, WI., again working for the Dairy Industry.

https://qz.com/1131428/if-the-entire-us-went-vegan-itd-be-a-public-health-disaster/

Now, once we find out who these people are, we have to wonder why, after all the scientific evidence there is that shows that consuming meat and dairy leads to a number of health problems, heart disease and cancer included, why oh why would the meat and dairy industry want to keep “proving” that a plant-based diet is going to kill you?  Could it be that meat and dairy consumption has declined, leading to the oh-so-problematic decline in profits?  Greed of course is behind this “study”.

Should one believe this study, one would think that anyone who is eating a plant-based diet should be on the verge of dying.  However, that is simply not true.  Well, I haven’t heard of anyone dying due to eating a healthy plant-based diet.  And, I am no-where near death myself, after almost five years on a vegan diet.  As a matter of fact, after my last yearly visit with my doctor, he was amazed at how low my cholesterol and sugar numbers were.  I was quite healthy with no nutritional death in sight.  There were no deficiencies in my diet that he could find.  Am I a modern medical miracle?  I think not, since my daughter also received a clean bill of health.

As far as the claims that humans simply cannot get the nutrition they need from plants, I beg to differ.  Calcium comes from plants, as do the other nutrients listed in the study.  When you receive any nutrients from eating the flesh of another animal, you are simply eating the middle-man.  Ever hear of broccoli or leafy greens?  Apparently the “researchers” didn’t.  For any questions regarding plant-based diet, please go to https://nutritionfacts.org/ and find out more information.  I apologize if anyone found this post too snarky.  I simply couldn’t help it.

Are Dietary Advanced Glycation End Products Unhealthy for You?

AGESPaleohacks

Lately there has been a concern that the vegan diet, which while being rich in both fruits and vegetables is an unhealthy diet due to its supposedly high levels of glycation, and may be contributing to the rise in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  This seemed an odd thing to me, since I was sure that fruits and vegetables did not have a causal relationship to either diabetes or cardiovascular disease, so I decided to look this up and see what was going on myself.

Table1

So, what did I find?  Well, according to the information below, animal-based foods are rich in AGE’s, and increase these after cooking.  However, fruits, vegetables and grains are not rich in AGE’s, and they don’t increase in these after cooking.  I’ve left two links, the first one is the actual findings of the study, and the second is a listing of all kinds of food with their AGE information so that you can pick and choose the healthiest foods to eat.  I hope that this summary clears up any confusion you might have.  I know that it helped me.
