Finding Serenity

Rainbow_at_strandhill-500-sm

Life can be pretty nuts.  Not only do we have to worry about what’s going on in our own lives, but there is also the human suffering that we all see every day – and a lot of that is not just somewhere “out there” in the world, but here at home.

So, what to do?  How can we deal with all of this?  The stress of just daily life can be overwhelming. How can we find some form of serenity?  There is only so much that we can do as individuals.  Yes, there are letters to write and petitions to sign, but how do we find a way to cope with the stresses that need to be dealt with?

Personally, at the end of the day I realize that there is only so much I can do to influence what’s going on “out there”.  I try to influence people who I come across each day.  If I think that someone who I don’t know looks really nice, I’ll tell them.  Just the look of surprise and happiness that I see on their faces lets me know that even though I may have hesitated to give them a compliment, it was the right decision.  And, although talking to a total stranger is hard for me, it was worthwhile.  So, let me know what you do to throw a little happiness out there in the world.  I’d love to hear your stories and advice.

Tears and Yoga

quote-crying-is-one-of-the-highest-devotional-songs-one-who-knows-crying-knows-spiritual-practice-kripalvananda-54-18-87

Okay, I can be funny here and say that Yoga does indeed make me cry.  When I realize that my lack of flexibility has gotten worse, since I stopped doing Yoga, I can cry with anger.  However, I’m talking about that crying that you do when you do a pose.  Something that opens up your flexibility and just suddenly you find yourself with tears running down your face.  That kind of crying.  I was wondering if that was a thing, since it’s happened to me twice this week, so I looked it up and discovered that I really am not insane.  It happens to other people too.  For some reason the hip-opening positions seem to start the tears for some people.

From what I’ve discovered, people tend to store emotions that they haven’t dealt with in their bodies.  Just think of how tense we become in stressful situations, and then we don’t totally relax after the situation has ended.  Later, when we stretch, those muscles relax and the tension is released, sometimes in the form of tears.  Hip openers seem to hit the tear trigger for me.  This is the area of my body where I’m the least flexible, so I assume that my tension resides here as well as my neck and shoulders.  However, it’s really easy to relax your neck and shoulders, since all you need to do is flex them, but the hips are more difficult.

While I’ve been doing the Sun Salutation for a while now, I realized that wasn’t enough, since I do tend to have flexibility problems. I was able to find my favorite yoga tape on YouTube recently and hence my tears.   I’m so glad that I’ve added to my Yoga routine, and that I’m not insane.  If you don’t do Yoga, you should try it since the benefits just keep adding up.  If you do cry while doing certain poses, just know that you’re not alone.

Keeping Depression at Bay

Here are some quotes for those of us who sign petitions, write letters and still feel depressed about the way the country is going.  Keep up your chins, hold love in your hearts, and keep on hoping for a new day.

What I Have to be Happy About This Week

maxresdefault

I can’t say that this week was so fantastic, however, it was a pretty good week.  I’ve got some pictures of flowers to share from our visit to the Florence Griswold Museum.  I also finally used my “new” steamer, so I’ll share that simple, easy “recipe”, if you can even call it that.  And, best of all, I’ve gotten a new computer that so far I haven’t broken – yay me!

Steamed Vegetables:

I just cut up some squash, zucchini, onions, peppers, broccoli and mushrooms and placed them into the steamer (we have a small one, so I did this a few times), which was already in a pot with an inch or so of boiling water, and steamed the veggies for about two and a half minutes.  Then, I served them on quinoa and brown rice along with some garlic sauce that we had left over from our Chinese meal from the last time we ordered.  You can use any veggies that you want.  It was delicious, if I do say so myself!

The new Destiny add-on dropped this week, and yes, I did play it on Wednesday (the first day it was available).  Fun, fun!  I’m “such” a gamer.

I’m back to working on getting my coaching certificate now that I’ve got a computer.  My goal had been September 30, but now I’m changing it to October 15, since I lost a full week of studying.  Ah, computers – they’re great when they work!

Hope you found something to be happy about this week!  Enjoy your weekend and be happy!

This Weekend – Me!

phpMpuWGp

I hope that you all have wonderful plans for the weekend.  My plans include…me!  It looks like we’re going to be in for some seriously hot and humid weather, along with rain and thunderstorms, so I thought that would be the perfect opportunity to do some “me” work.  I haven’t had a chance to write in my journal for a while now, so hopefully while everyone else is busy doing whatever it is that they want to do, I’ll be able to write a little.

Then, I want to find a book on CD to listen to and do some embroidery for my quilt tops.  It sounds silly, but I find sitting down and listening to a book while embroidering to be extremely relaxing.  And, of course I’ll be reading a little myself.

I know that my plans aren’t exciting or anything like that, but after the past few weeks I really need to just sit down and spend some quiet time with myself.  Enjoy your weekend!

Things I Don’t Understand

Understand

As an animal lover, member of the human race, believer in the happy way of life and mainly trying to live most of my life in my make-believe world with the fairies, unicorns, pixies, and all the other magical creatures, I find many many things to be completely non-sensical.  Here is a partial list of the things that I can’t wrap my head around:

guns-dont-kill-people-they-just-make-it-easier-quote-1

Guns – using them for any purpose whatsoever.

Using Animals – for food, entertainment, to wear.

Hate – really it serves absolutely no purpose.

I spend about an hour a day signing petitions against the most abhorrent things.  Animal abuse that is so horrific you wouldn’t believe it until you see the pictures/videos, newscasts proving it to be true.  The amount of people who are starving; who are abused in every way possible; human trafficking for sex or work; the daily oppression and hate that people deal with is mind blowing.  So much of the world is ugly, morally reprehensible.  And, it’s happening all over the world.  In our hometowns and across the globe.  Hate reigns – it’s a hate-fest out there.

I’ve been told that I “just don’t know what’s going on”.  Really?  I read the reports from Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch; I read news from all over the world.  I’m pretty aware.

481993_623406397674159_150530641_n

But all this awareness and knowledge doesn’t bring about and understanding of the hate.  Wake up, bring your anger against those who have the power to change things but don’t.  Those who write policies that make the world worse than ever; those are the people who deserve to lose their power, not the powerless.

All of us are the same.  What happens to one happens to all.
