Protesting J. Marion Sims – the “father of modern gynecology”

When I first heard about this protest, I really didn’t know anything at all, so I looked into it.  Black women are protesting the statue of J. Marion Sims, known as the “father of modern gynecology” that stands in front of the New York Academy of Medicine.  What is it that J. Marion Sims did?  He bought black female slaves for the purpose of performing genital surgery on them, both without using anesthesia and without their consent.  He did not use anesthesia because Sims was under the opinion that blacks did not have the capacity to feel pain.

Tuskegee experiments

There is a long history of minority people being used in medical experiments, this includes injecting plutonium into the blood of black men; infecting black neighborhoods with mosquitoes carrying both yellow fever and dengue fever; prison populations were used to find out if some products were toxic; and the list goes on and on.  If you want more examples please go to the link I’ve left below.

So, what do you think about all this?  Do you believe that statues in honor of people who have committed acts such as these should be removed?  Let me know in the comments below.

Stepping Toward Goals

always-be-a-goal-digger-quote-1

Here is an update on my accomplishments over the summer. I had a long list of things that I wanted to get done.  Right now, I’m feeling pretty low because I haven’t done them all, but here’s the list of what I have done:  doctor visit; license plates turned in and truck off the insurance policy; computer room cleared out and “stuff” taken to the swap-shop at the town dump; living room cleaned out and some books given to the library; mortgage refinancing done; budget planning in process of updating; chapter book written (working on revising and pictures).

My unfinished list is longer, but I’m plugging away.  Some things that I’m actively working on: de-cluttering house; coaching accreditation (this is almost) accomplished; cleaning out second shower (I’ve been storing bottles of water in there for when we lose our electricity); keeping house picked-up; and setting up a new schedule.

Wow, on paper it looks like I’ve been busy.  As they say, looks can be deceiving.  While I feel that there are a lot of things that could be better, I am glad that I wrote down what I have done, and what it is that I’m currently working on.  It does make me feel that I have accomplished something so far.

How are you doing at getting your goals accomplished?  Let me know in the comments, and we can encourage each other.

Am I Aryan?

hate-maya angelou

Just like the original Nazi’s, most of the people who call themselves “aryan” don’t look it.  Like Hitler, they are not what an “aryan” is “supposed” to look like.  How do I know?  The dictionary says of Nordic (mostly Scandinavian) descent.  So, does that mean that I, who am mostly Swedish (I’m a “mutt”, since I am also German, English and most likely everything in between).  Now, as far as looks go I’m the poster child for the “aryan race” – blond hair (not dyed); blue-eyed, and excessively fair-skinned.

Now, I’m sure your next question would be, do I think I’m “superior”, since I’ve got the physical aspects of being so – according to some people?  NO!  Let me say this, there is no superior race!  There is only the human race.  Get that through your heads.

As far as my German heritage is concerned, the tiny village my grandfather was born in no longer exists.  My grandfather came to New York sometime in the early 1930’s, while two of his older brothers went to Canada, leaving three other brothers and his younger sister along with his mother and father in their village.  When the Nazis discovered that someone in the village was hiding Jews, all the men and boys were lined up and shot and the women and girls were sent to Auschwitz.  The village was then destroyed.  I don’t even know the name of it, and my great aunt, who did survive, always wore long sleeves to cover her numbers.  I only saw them a few times, and that was definitely by mistake, as she was embarrassed by them.  I wish I could have talked to her about what had happened to her and my great-grandmother, but she hardly ever talked.  She was a sweet woman, and I loved her, but I never really knew her.

How can people find pride in claiming to be the Alt-right, KKK, or “Aryan”, I’ll never understand.  We had a war (World War II) over this and they lost.  So, are these people, by extension, losers? I know what I think, but what do you think?  How can anyone claim superiority over someone else?  Let me know how you feel about this in the comments below.  Do you agree that we are all one, and there is only the human race?

Do You Worry About What Other People Think?

beyourself3

I hope that you don’t spend your life worrying about what “other” people think of you.  A friend of mine refuses to leave the house without her make-up on.  She thinks that “other” people will think less of her if they see her without her make-up on.  This extends to all people who might see her, not just people she knows, but anyone and everyone who might see her.  As a person who routinely leaves the house without make-up on, I find this to be a complete waste of time.

However, there have been times when after having a lengthy conversation with myself in a store, I will look around and be relieved that no one else was in the aisle with me.  I’ve been known to be overheard, and when I am, I simply smile at the other person and continue on my way.  The truth is that I probably will never see that person again, and who cares anyway.

There is one place that people seem to feel immune to others looking at them, and that is while in the car.  When I worked in the city, sitting in traffic on the way home was the most interesting time ever (especially if you’re a people-watcher, like me).  I’ve seen people singing and “dancing” along to the music, (which is one of my favorite things to do in the car), talking to themselves, putting on makeup, and my favorite (and I’m sure yours, too), is the men (it’s usually men) who feel that picking their noses while in public is fine, since a car with many windows, apparently is not public.  So, when I occasionally get “caught” doing a few dance steps to really good music at Walmart or Stop and Shop, I truly don’t get upset.  After all, I haven’t been caught with my finger up my nose!

So, don’t spend your time worrying about what others think of you.  Whatever it is that you’re doing, you can be sure someone, somewhere is doing something much more interesting!  Enjoy yourself, be yourself and don’t worry.  In the large scheme of things, it doesn’t matter!

Updating Monsanto

3b7ca57ea76d4a04de46aa1f40400c59

I first wrote about the trial of Monsanto at The Hague.  Just a quick update with how that turned out.  The company was found guilty on all charges, and the ban on any and all Monsanto products being sold in the European Union still stands.

However, I also wanted to write about newly released documents that show how Monsanto has been paying off government regulators and scientists in an effort to keep them from publishing scientific studies that show the harm that Monsanto products (in this case, Roundup) do, along with using their influence to stop scientific studies that show Roundup to be a health hazard.  There are lawsuits around the country that claim that Roundup is a carcinogen.  These documents have been made available to the public, since this is a public health concern.

I hope that you go to the links provided below and read the articles.  This is an important discussion to have, since there is an effort in the U.S. to allow corporations to self-regulate.  I feel that this shows that no corporation should be allowed to self-regulate, but that the entire process needs to be made completely public, with all scientific data peer-reviewed and released to the general public.
