I am Bewildered

I am bewildered. I don’t know what is happening in this country. And, I don’t understand it. I don’t understand why someone would massacre 20 young children at a school. I don’t understand why someone would go to a movie theater and kill people. I don’t understand why police shoot first and don’t bother to ask questions after. I don’t understand ramming open a door in the middle of the night, throwing a flash bomb and burning babies.

I can’t comprehend any of this. Why do so many of us live with a mindset of “Us against Them”? If your own life is so appalling that it makes you blame others, why don’t you figure out what it is that you can do to change it? Why put the blame on others? Radio and TV is full of hate speech, only we don’t call it that. It’s their First Amendment right to spew it; however when protesters protest calmly and quietly they are pepper-sprayed and arrested. They don’t have a civic duty to protest.

Bigotry and racism are so ingrained in our society and I don’t understand why. We have more open relationships than ever before, yet the vocal and psychical angst against it seems to be growing day by day. People who claim to be religious pick and choose what quotes from the Bible to follow. When they begin following Deuteronomy 22:11-12 regarding mixing of fabrics in their clothing, and tassels on their robes, maybe they might have a little authority; but to pick and choose what quote to follow and deny Jesus’ many exhortations of mercy and goodness boggles the mind. Jesus told his followers to love each other (John 13:34-35) and to do unto others as you would have them do unto you (Matthew 7:12); and finally, John 8:7 “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone.” But, in my mind their authority on beliefs and judgments goes out the door when they “forget” Jesus Christ’s prescribed rules to follow.

When there is so much wrong in the world (unmitigated greed; wars; famine; poverty) and so many productive things we all could be doing (as the Pope has pointed out), why oh why are we waging war on each other? And for such superficial things? Race, sexual orientation, legal status, etc. Please can’t we all unite against the real forces of evil?
